Painted for the International Public Art Festival (IPAF) in Cape Town, South Africa, this piece depicts a couple walking through a Western Cape scene of giant protea flowers and fynbos - pants that are endemic to the region. The couple becomes one with their environment, transforming into the very flora that surrounds them. Their race and background are indiscernible; they are simply South African.
Each year IPAF invites artists from around the world to paint murals in the neighborhood of Salt River. A majority Muslim community, this historically depressed area is in the midst of revitalization and beautification. My mural graces the side of local mechanic and tire shop. The owner, Feroz, is a well loved leader in the community who has given much to his neighbors and patrons. When he saw how the mural had changed the side of his garage he asked that I carry the design around to the front. In the end I gave him a rebranding, as well, updating his logo.
